SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Black Box Studios offers theater arts programs at private schools and day schools throughout the greater New York City area. Each program is custom-tailored to meet the needs of the school and student body. Classes take place during school hours as part of the regular curriculum, as an after-school program such as a drama club, or both.
Our school programs are taught using an improv-based method that Black Box's founders developed during their years working in professional theater in New York. Students begin by working with our teaching artists on the fundamentals of acting and performance, such as voice, movement, character development, script analysis, and song interpretation.
Students then put these skills into use as they perform scenes, songs, and productions of plays and musicals under the direction of Black Box's instructors. Our courses are performance-based and culminate in an end-of-semester production that is fully-staged and open to family, friends, and the school community.
These programs also feature a technical theater component that teaches students about the skills needed to work backstage, such as stage management, lighting design, set design, costumes, and props. Students then use what they've learned to design and run the technical aspects of the productions.
Black Box's School Programs bring the performing arts to your students, regardless of their age, background, or experience level.
