Black Box Studios offers a variety of vibrant theater arts programs at private schools, day schools, and public schools in Bergen County, NJ and throughout New York City.
Each program is custom-tailored to meet the needs of the school and student body, so all backgrounds and experience levels can be satisfied. Classes- ongoing or one-time events- take place during school hours as part of the regular curriculum or as an after-school program, such as a drama club. Students from grade school, middle school, high school, and even college are taught using a creatively-freeing and collaborative improv-based method that Black Box’s founders developed during their years working in professional theater in New York.
Students begin by working with our nurturing and experienced teaching artists on the fundamentals of acting and performance, such as voice, movement, character development, script analysis, and song interpretation (if applicable). The ongoing courses are performance-based and culminate in an end-of-semester production that is fully-staged and open to family, friends, and the school community. These shows run from two to five performances, never one-nighters.
The programs also feature a technical component that teaches students about the skills needed to work backstage at a theater, such as stage management, lighting, set design, costume design, and more. It is the students who design and run the technical aspects of the productions.
